ECM Mission Trip Report from David Jones...

Sixteen students, led by Coy Macy, went to New Orleans to help with the rebuilding efforts with Presbyterian Disaster Service, and eight students and ECM campus pastor, David Jones, went to Louisville for a poverty immersion with an organization called UrbanSpirit (DOC).  The student leader for the Louisville group was Andrea Stockwell.  The students who went to New Orleans were part of a group of 89 volunteers from around the country (consisting of both college students and older adult groups) staying at the Olive Tree mission station.  They were grouped according to skill level and sent out to perform a variety of tasks to enable homeowners to return to their homes.  Some painted, while others installed drywall, installed windows and doors, and engaged in work on the exteriors of the houses.  Each morning and evening, they shared household chores and daily devotions and worship with the others at their mission station.  On several occasions in the evenings they were able to go out sightseeing in the city’s famous French Quarter.  The nine participants on the Louisville trip had a very different kind of experience, as they discovered, first hand, what it was like to live in poverty through a “poverty immersion simulation experience” organized by UrbanSpirit (www.urbanspirit.org).  Participants were grouped into three family scenarios and given different challenges to deal with throughout the week.  These are challenges that poor people experience on a daily basis: going hungry, being homeless, working and living in difficult physical conditions, having little or no control over things like schedules and being perpetually short of money to pay for food and shelter and child care and health care.  Participants came very quickly to understand how poverty sucks the life out of people.  This new understanding opened up new ways of reading scripture, new ways of understanding what it means to live in community and a new resolve to work toward creating healthier and fairer systems for people to live within.  In between, the participants had the opportunity to work, and interact with the local inhabitants, in a variety of social service agencies within the neighborhood—a retirement center, an elementary school, a public library, a neighborhood center and a community garden.  Both trips produced some unforgettable images and experiences for those who participated.

  • Local Mission  = Meadowlark; ECM; Shepherd’s Crossing; Community Clinic; Second Helping; Crop Walk; Groups who use our facilities; Tend My Sheep.
